Myofascial release, what is it and when should I do it?

Quick answer

Myofascial release is a hands-on technique that works the fascia, the tissue that wraps the muscles, to release stuck tension points. It helps people with persistent pain in the back, shoulders or neck that relaxation alone doesn't fix. I use it within therapeutic massage, adjusting to what your body needs in each session.

Myofascial release applied to the shoulder and neck, a technique of sustained fascia stretching

How it works in practice

Instead of a quick stroke, I apply light, sustained pressure on the fascia, stretching slowly until I feel the tissue release. It's slower than a regular massage, and the effect usually shows up after a few minutes on that spot.

Here at Essência do Cuidar, I use it within therapeutic massage, based on what you tell me before the session. A stiff shoulder, pain between the shoulder blades and neck tension usually call for more of this fascia work than for point pressure.

Who it's for

I don't use myofascial release for bruxism. If that's your complaint, the right referral is another professional.
